Frances Alicia Muir is a British soprano, music educator and performing arts professional whose career spans classical performance, music education and arts leadership. Born in Halifax, England, Frances began developing her musical abilities from an early age, studying singing and piano under the guidance of her grandmother, a distinguished music educator. She also played clarinet and participated in choirs, including the Northamptonshire Mass Choir, with whom she performed at the Junior Proms at the Royal Albert Hall in London in 2006.

Following her family's move to South Africa in 2007, Frances developed a strong parallel career in sport, representing KwaZulu-Natal in swimming, lifesaving and touch rugby. At Crawford College North Coast, she continued to pursue music and performing arts, and graduated in 2012 with five distinctions and was recognised as Sports Person of the Year and Highest Overall Achiever.

Frances began her university studies at the University of Pretoria in 2013, initially studying Biological Sciences while continuing her sporting career. She represented the university and provincial teams in rugby sevens and touch rugby, contributing to three national championship-winning teams in a single year. Her enduring passion for music and the performing arts ultimately led her to change direction academically. From 2014, she studied voice and music under the tutelage of Dr Hanli Stapela, graduating with a Bachelor of Music with distinction in 2018.

During her undergraduate studies, Frances performed a variety of operatic roles and scenes, including the title role Thaïs, Gilda in Rigoletto, Giulietta in Les contes d’Hoffmann, and Erste and Zweite Dame in Die Zauberflöte. In 2018, she was also part of Umculo Opera's staged production of Bach's St John Passion. The production received significant international recognition, winning the 2019 International Opera Award for Outreach and Education and the 2019 Classical Innovation Award.

Her developing performance career subsequently took her to international programmes in Europe and the United States. Frances attended the Taos Opera Institute and Berlin Opera Academy, performing roles including Julie in Speed Dating Tonight, Zweite Knabe in Die Zauberflöte and Ann Putnam in The Crucible. In 2020, she recorded the roles of Erste and Zweite Dame from Die Zauberflöte for the University of Pretoria Music and Enrichment Virtual Festival.

In September 2021, Frances completed her Master of Music in Performing Art with distinction and was subsequently invited to become a lifetime member of the Golden Key International Honour Society. Alongside her continued vocal development, she trained under soprano Daniella Halbwachs and continued to pursue opportunities in opera and classical performance.

In 2022, Frances performed the role of Contessa Almaviva in Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro at the Estates Theatre as part of the Prague Summer Nights Music Festival. The same year marked an important change in her professional direction as she completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Education and began her career as a music educator in Dubai.

​

Since moving into education, Frances has established herself as a dedicated music teacher and department leader. She has taught across primary and secondary phases, developing curriculum, leading choirs and ensembles, directing musical productions and creating opportunities for young musicians to perform. She has progressed into whole-school music leadership, currently working as Head of Music at Horizon International School in Dubai. Her role encompasses curriculum leadership, departmental development, staff mentoring, budgeting and resource management, as well as the planning and delivery of performances and musical productions. She is particularly passionate about creating inclusive opportunities for children to experience music as performers, creators and listeners.

Her professional journey has also included a significant period of personal and artistic resilience. Following a brain tumour diagnosis in 2022 and subsequent radiation treatment, Frances experienced a substantial impact on her health and vocal ability. Returning to singing required her to rebuild aspects of her vocal technique and approach to performance. With renewed determination, she has continued her vocal development and has returned to professional performance.

In 2026, Frances returned to the professional operatic stage, performing as a member of the chorus in a production of Bizet's Carmen at Dubai Opera. This marked an important milestone in her return to professional performance and the beginning of a renewed pursuit of her operatic career. She continues to develop her performance work in Dubai and internationally, with forthcoming projects including solo performances in African Sanctus and the role of Violetta in Verdi's La Traviata.

Frances' career brings together three enduring passions: music, education and performance. Whether performing on the operatic stage, leading a school music department or helping a young musician discover their voice, she is committed to developing musical excellence while creating meaningful and accessible opportunities for others.
